China Central Television is the national TV Station of the People’s Republic of China, which was trial-broadcasted on May 1st, and formally broadcasted on September 2nd, 1958. Its original name was Beijing TV Station. On May 1st, 1978, it was renamed as China Central Television, CCTV in English for short. Nowadays, a pluralistic management pattern of multi-media propaganda, advertisement management and industry expansion combined with television, film, cartoon making, network, newspapers and periodicals as well as teletext has been formed.

 

CCTV is China’s important news organ, and is the significant voice of the Party, the government and the people, as well as China’s important cultural position. It plays various functions such as information spreading, social education, culture and entertainment and information service, etc. It is the main channel for the general public to get information, as well as the important window for China to understand the world and for the world to understand China.

 

Since the reform and opening-up, CCTV has developed vigorously and changed with each passing day. Presently, it totally launches 15 TV channels, namely, News Channel, General Channel, Economy Channel, General Art Channel, International Channel in Chinese, Sports Channel, Film Channel, Agriculture Channel, Military Channel, Play Channel, English Channel, Science & Education Channel, Traditional Opera Channel, Western Channel, Children Channel and Music Channel, etc., with the contents nearly covering all fields of social life. At present, there are nearly 400 columns, and the daily broadcasting time reaches 270 hours. Among all the programs, 75.36% are made by CCTV itself, and the programs are broadcasted internationally and domestically in Chinese, English, French, Spanish, as well as in Cantonese and Minnan dialects. Fraction of coverage of the national population reaches 90%, and the audience surpasses 1.1 billion. CCTV-4 (International Channel in Chinese) and CCTV-9 (English Channel) are broadcasted to the whole world by satellite transmission.

 

CCTV has fairly large –scale and world-leading technical equipments and devices, among which, the DSNG can give a living broadcasting to significant news events at any time and place. Program making, broadcast transmission, satellite transmission and news feedback have generally realized digitalization; multi-media networks have realized resources sharing, and the management system of automatic and intellectual work has been initially formed.

 

CCTV, being a vice-ministerial governmental-sponsored institution, has 15 centers and nearly 10,000 employees. Organs directly under CCTV include China Teleplay Production Center, China News Directory Film Studio, Beijing Science and Education Film Studio, etc. ‘CCTV International Network’ is one of the six major news websites in China. Average circulation of China TV Guide of each period reaches over 3 million, ranking first among all the newspapers and periodicals of China. Research of TV is the first professional and theoretical periodical of TV published openly in China. China International Television Corporation solely managed by CCTV primarily makes and publishes TV programs, and concurrently manages the businesses of TV technical service, investigation and consultation as well as advertisement agent, etc. It is also widely involved in large-scale group corporations of industrial investment and capital operation, and it is the only corporation that has been approved by the state to manage the international transaction of TV program copyright. It has established program marketing network covering 36 countries and 145 companies. It has various scales’ TV and film program bases in Wuxi of Jiangsu Province, Nanhai of Guangdong Province, Weihai of Shandong Province, Zhuozhou of Hebei Province. By the end of 2000, fixed assets of CCTV reached RMB 5.4 billion. In 2001, the annual income reached 6.09977 billion (not including the 550 million transferred to the next year), ranking first in the news media of China.

 

Based in China and facing the world, CCTV establishes and keeps good partnerships with local TV stations and cultural institutions at all levels. It has established business relations with 208 media in 134 countries and regions of the world. Furthermore, it gives timely coverage to significant news events in the world through 14 correspondent stations set in foreign countries. CCTV has become the biggest TV station and transmission institution with some international influence in today’s China.
